Malayan flour mills (mfm) internship

As I approach the end of my 2nd year in university. I wanted to try out something new. As I had internship experience in an engineering company before, so I wanted to expand my horizons and try out alternative career internships. I understand that a significant number engineering graduates end up in the finance sector, and would like to try my luck gaining experience in it.

I ended up taking an internship with Malayan Flour Mills, a regional Multi-national Company based in Malaysia. They are the second largest flour producing company in Malaysia and were looking to recruit an intern in their purchasing department. I was given the small project by the company to streamline their data transfer process from the cloud database (JDC oracle) to the people working within the purchasing department. This is important because the purchasing department needs to make an informed decision based on the current pricing of important raw materials and the current inventory levels in our warehouse. I created a few excel macros that were able to accelerate the data transfer and tabulation process of these raw materials.

Throughout the 3 months, I was also given the opportunity to learn commodity hedging from my manager. I understood the importance of holding short and long positions in vital commodities such as wheat and soy (important ingredients in flour production) to maximize company profits. I have also learned valuable interpersonal skills working with people from diverse background as well as navigating complicated office politics. I was also given the opportunity to be at both ends of the business spectrum by meeting clients and suppliers.

On my last week of internship, I was given the opportunity to visit the flour mill. The full trip was funded by the company. It was an eye opening experience to be given a tour around the mill and understanding the various process needed for flour production and distribution. It also gave my work more context and I was incredibly grateful for the warm farewell gift by the company.

Below is a letter of recommendation I have received from my mentor, Mr. Chua Kiat Hwa, the senior purchasing manager of MFM.
